The design studio focused on a specific site in São Paulo, where the largest wholesale market in Latin America is located: the CEAGESP—Companhia de Entrepostos e Armazéns Gerais de São Paulo.

Nowadays 50,000 people circulate around the clock through its warehouses as 250 tons of goods are daily distributed across the entire country.

Following the city’s new master plan, the market will be transferred to the periphery of São Paulo in the next five years. The goal of the design course was to redefine this large urban fragment in regard to its context and the city. Taking São Paulo’s first-rate architecture as a reference, the studio dealt with the city’s complexity, reflecting on how to generate meaningful collective spaces that promote social activities and public appropriation.

The projects were submitted for the 2017 Schindler Global Award competition. Alisa Labrenz and Niti Malik were awarded second prize. Magnus Lidman and Silvio Rutishauser received a travel grant.
